Newcastle High School for Girls, the North East of England’s only independent girls’ day school for pupils aged 3–18, is seeking a Teacher of Religious Studies to join our successful and well established Humanities team. This is an opportunity for a reflective and committed teacher to work within a selective academic environment that places equal value on intellectual enquiry and pastoral care.

We are looking for a teacher with high expectations of pupils, secure subject knowledge and a commitment to helping girls develop confidence, critical thinking and thoughtful engagement with complex ideas. Building respectful, supportive and constructive relationships with pupils is central to our ethos. The successful candidate will have experience of teaching Religious Studies at GCSE and A Level and the ability to make the subject engaging, rigorous and relevant.

Alongside their classroom teaching, the successful candidate will take on the role of PSHE Coordinator, with responsibility for coordinating the delivery and development of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education across the Senior School. This includes overseeing a coherent, age appropriate curriculum that supports pupils’ wellbeing, safety and preparation for adult life. The role involves close collaboration with teaching colleagues, pastoral staff and external specialists to ensure PSHE provision remains responsive, inclusive and aligned with pupils’ needs.

The Department

Religious Studies at NHSG plays a distinctive role within the curriculum, supporting pupils’ understanding of belief, values and the wider cultural and religious landscape. Pupils study the major world religions, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism, through teaching that is objective, respectful and academically challenging. Lessons encourage analytical thinking, philosophical reflection and informed discussion, developing pupils’ skills in interpretation, evaluation and dialogue.

The successful candidate will join a supportive Humanities team committed to high academic standards, thoughtful teaching and strong pastoral awareness. This role offers the opportunity to teach pupils across the Senior School and to contribute meaningfully to their intellectual and personal development.
